"Land of Afghans," Afghan from the Sanskrit tribal name Asvaka meaning "horseman", as the country was noted for its fine breed of horses; and the Persian suffix -stan meaning "land". Said tribal name Asvaka was apparently used in reference to the Kambojas in antiquity. The Arabic Afgan is an adaptation of the Prakrit form Avagana as first used by Varahamihira in his B?hat Sa?hita in the 6th century CE. Since the Middle Ages, "Afghan" has been used as a synonym for Pashtun.
